I’ve always loved the art of smudging. What’s smudging, you ask? Simply put, it’s “burning sage” to cleanse your space and clear out negative vibes. I fell in love with not just the ritual, but also the fragrance, so much so that I decided to capture that same energy in a candle.

And because lavender has always been my go-to for relaxation, I thought: why not blend the two? For about a year now, I’ve been hand-pouring sage candles for our home, and let me tell you, the calm they bring is unmatched. Add lavender to the mix, and suddenly you’ve got an aromatic one-two punch of cleansing and relaxation.

That’s exactly how our newest mood was born: “Let That Sh*t Go.” It’s not just a candle; it’s a reminder to release what no longer serves you and fill your space with calm, clarity, and peace.

The Art of Smudging with Sage

Smudging is an ancient spiritual practice that involves burning sacred herbs—most commonly white sage—to cleanse a person, object, or space of negative energy. Rooted in Indigenous traditions across the Americas, smudging has long been used in ceremonies to invite balance, peace, and protection. When sage is lit, its smoke is believed to attach itself to stagnant energy, lifting it away as the smoke disperses into the air.

How It Works

  • Cleansing: The rising smoke is thought to clear unwanted or heavy energy from a space.

  • Grounding: The earthy, herbal scent of sage helps center the mind, making it easier to release stress and focus on the present.

  • Intention Setting: Smudging is often paired with affirmations or prayers, which direct the purpose of the ritual—whether that’s healing, clarity, or relaxation.

Modern Use

Today, many people practice smudging as a ritual of self-care and mindfulness. Lighting sage or sage-infused candles can create a calming environment that encourages deep breathing, reflection, and renewal. The combination of sage with calming botanicals like lavender (as in your Let That Sht Go* candle) enhances this ritual, blending tradition with modern aromatherapy.
